Protein
What is protein?
Protein is the major structural component of all cells in the body. Proteins function as enzymes, in membranes, as transport carriers and as hormones; and their component amino acids serve as precursors for nucleic acids, hormones, vitamins, and other important molecules.

What happens if I have a deficiency in protein?
Kwashiorkor, severe protein deficiency, causes retention of fluid and if severe, the abdomen may protrude.

What happens if I have excess protein?
There is little scientific literature on the effects of consuming very high protein diets.
